Education in Greene
Both Greeneville and Greene County school systems received the Governor’s A+ Award for Community Excellence in Education. Only 52 of the 139 school systems in Tennessee have qualified for this recognition.
Greeneville City School System
Greeneville ranks fifth out of 136 school systems in Tennessee Competency Test results and the city school system consistently rates above state averages in attendance and graduation rates (96.7%). Approximately 238 teachers and administrators (five with doctoral degrees, 147 with master’s degrees, and 14 with specialist degrees) are among the system’s 416 employees. The student/teacher ratio is 14:1 and the Per Pupil Expenditure is $10,237. The Greeneville City School System is also one of only two systems in Tennessee that have maintained accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for more than 40 years.


Greene County School System
Of the 565 teachers and administrators employed by the county system, 65% hold advanced degrees. The student/teacher ratio is 15:1 and the Per Pupil Expenditure is $7,640, while the graduation rate is 94.9%. The Greene County School System is also accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
